Presenter Call for Class Proposal

The Fine Print
BurlyCon 2018 is seeking proposals for classes, workshops, presentations, papers, and panels. Our focus is on submissions that will enhance creativity and professionalism, strengthen community relationships, and advance the caliber of art made by the community. For the purposes of this event:
- A paper will be defined as: a one-hour presentation of work written by one or more persons that can be delivered in a lecture OR panel type environment OR can be published and hung (without formal presentation) in our Library for the duration of the Convention.
- A class will be defined as: a one or one-and-a-half hour session during which an instructor provides instruction to students in a lecture or interactive format. (Types: Movement, Demonstration, Lecture, Workshop, Roundtable Discussion, etc.)
- A panel will be defined as: a one or one-and-a-half hour moderated session with multiple presenters offering papers OR viewpoints on a topic, followed by Q&A. You may request to be a panelist, or moderator, or simply propose a topic for others to discuss. Panelists and moderators are assigned by the BurlyCon 2018 Programming Committee.
- Proposal subjects and topics may include, but are not limited to the following: movement/choreography, costuming, burlesque history, production, theatrical techniques, stage management, make-up, prop/set building, race/age/gender/size/ability/etc, or academic treatments of burlesque.
BurlyCon 2018 invites artists, scholars, teachers, and all interested parties to submit proposals on any relevant topic. The Programming Committee will review all proposals, and select those that best fit the greater framework of the convention.
All proposals for the BurlyCon 2018 curriculum are due by 5:00pm PST on March 15th, 2018. No late submissions will be accepted. Please click on the button at the bottom of this page to fill out the online form. The Programming Committee will notify ALL applicants by April 15th, 2018.
PROPOSAL REVIEW PROCEDURES
Proposals will be reviewed by the Programming Committee, and evaluated on the following criteria:
- Read our Proposal Tips and prep your data prior to starting the application.
- Have your bio, class descriptions, and other info in a document you have spell-checked and can copy and paste into the form. If you are submitting more than one item, then you will need to submit your presenter info and bio each time. This will save you time.
- Is the topic relevant to the community and this convention?
- Is the proposal organized, clear, and understandable?
- Is your topic specific? (A class on “How to be Awesome” is less likely to be accepted than a class on “How to Strip in a Corset.”)
- Are your class descriptions and bio concise and well-written?
- Does the proposal and/or applicant’s references suggest that this presenter would be an effective teacher? (Previous teaching experience is not a requirement, though it will be taken into consideration.)
Please be aware that all materials submitted at the time of application will be final. You will not have an opportunity to change the information you submit; nor will you be able to adjust your classroom needs as the date of the convention approaches. Please be sure to plan thoroughly, and triple-edit all your information before submitting.
IF YOU ARE ACCEPTED
- Contracts: You will be expected to return a signed contract to the Programming Committee by the contract deadline. Your contract will be administered online via DocuSign.
- Compensation: BurlyCon offers a stipend per class, and all teachers are offered free conference admission in recognition of your work. Unfortunately, BurlyCon is only able to offer assistance with lodging and travel to a very limited number of invited presenters.
- Workshop Materials and Equipment: You will be expected to provide the materials necessary for their workshop(s), as well as any handouts they wish to supply to students. BurlyCon will have available a limited number of projectors, stereo systems, and whiteboards. Please bring any cable adapters necessary to connect your computer/iPod/electronic device to BurlyCon’s projector or stereo, as BurlyCon does not have extras.
Again, all proposals are due by 5:00pm March 15th, 2018 (PST).
Proposals will be reviewed and confirmation letters will be sent by April 15th, 2018.
